Shareholder Newsletter

The latest edition of the Sealaska Shareholder newsletter will be hitting mailboxes this week.

Sealaska publishes the newsletter on a quarterly basis. The printed document provides a highlight of Sealaska activity and updates on Sealaska Heritage Institute from the last quarter of 2011. Some highlights include information on Sealaska land stewardship practices, new Sealaska employees and a story on tribal member shareholder Dr. Janice Sheufelt.

Program upholding Northwest Coast art and inspiring new carvers.

Sealaska’s newest subsidiary Haa Aaní, LLC is a board-driven initiative to sustain and develop new Southeast economies, particularly in our rural communities. Haa Aani, LLC’s current activities include renewable energy, mariculture, construction aggregates, development of a community development financial institution, and community collaboration. 

Haa Aani, LLC is led by Sealaska tribal member shareholder Russell Dick of Hoonah. His team includes Bill Bennett, Alaska Coastal Aggregates general manager, and tribal member shareholders Katherine Eldemar and Nathan Soboleff, project coordinators, and Anthony Lindoff, business analyst.

Tsimshian Totem Pole Unveiled at NMAI

Tsimshian carver David Boxley and son David Boxley Jr. carve 22-foot totem

Sealaska and Sealaska Heritage Institute leaders attended the celebration and dedication of a 22-foot totem pole carved by Tsimshian carver and Sealaska tribal member shareholder David Boxley at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian. The totem tells the story of “The Eagle and the Young Chief.” It was unveiled on January 14, 2012.

Celebration 2012

Celebration 2012 will be held in Juneau on June 7-9, 2012.

The theme this year is "Strengthen Yourself"--Ayaniltseenáa (Tlingit)  Án hl is daguyáa (Haida) Lip sha gotgyednshm (Tsimshian).
The Xudzidaa Kwáan Dancers of Angoon will lead Celebration 2012. Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) sponsors the biennial event, with a major contribution from Sealaska Corporation.

The deadline from groups to submit dance applications is March 2, 2012. Alaska Airlines is offering a discount on travel to Juneau for Celebration 2012.

Sealaska 2012 Annual Meeting Set

Sealaska will hold its 39th Annual Meeting of Tribal Member Shareholders on Saturday, June 23, 2012 in Juneau, Alaska.

The 2012 annual meeting will be a time to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Sealaska and celebrate our vision for the future. If you are not able to attend in person, the meeting will be broadcast live on the Internet via www.sealaska.com for tribal member shareholders. We hope to see you there.

State of Indian Nations Address

National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) President Jefferson Keel will deliver the State of Indian Nations Address on January 26, 2012.

According to NCAI, the address is an opportunity to highlight key priorities for the federal government to consider when upholding the federal trust responsibility to tribal nations through 2012.

The event will be held at the Newseum, Knight Studio in Washington D.C. It is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. EST. It will also be streamed live on the web
